Cat Names

I've always found it interesting to see what cat names people choose. The interesting part is that there is usually some story behind it and I like to hear why people chose the names they did. Since our cats have unusual names we are often asked how we came up with them.
Bhima, Sati, Krsangi, and Gauravani are all Sanskrit names. We were attending a Yoga Class at the time we got the cats and used to sometimes listen to old Indian stories about powerful Yogis of ancient times.
Because we knew that our kittens would have to be strong in order to survive without a mother, we wanted to give them powerful names. We first thought about Greek or German mythology, but we just loved the sound of the Sanskrit names.
So, we watched our cats and considered their individual personality and qualities. We then chose their Sanskrit names somewhat instinctively but the meaning of the different Sanskrit names was important to us. Some of the names stuck right away but others got changed after a day or two until we got to the name that felt like it 'fit'.
Bhima:
means "Very strong man". He is our only male and he was very strong and energetic as a kitten. He also took a leadership role from the beginning and the girls look to him as a kind of protector. His is very much the big brother to them even though he is a little bit of a mama's boy. He's got an unusually warm and loving personality (even for a cat) and is the utmost tolerant. He is definitely top cat around here.Sati:
means "Truthful". She is the only one of the litter that is a white cat and she always looked very pure. Now she is a little bit of a tomboy though and tends to show up dirty like she has been playing in the mud. She likes to sleep on a high spot and she kicks Krsangi out if she is in her spot. Sati is second in the hierarchy and she took on a mothering role for the other kittens, especially Krsangi, when they were all little.Gauravani:
basically means "the instruction of God". This was actually the only name that we chose just for the sound of it. She got very sick when she was very little and we hadn't decided on a name for her yet. I was pretty emotional about it because she was so helpless and I really wanted her to have a special and beautiful name. I named her Gauravani on the day that I thought she might die. But she is a tough little thing and she pulled through. All the other kittens passed her up in terms of growth and she was the littlest one from that point on. She may be the smallest but she is also the most independent cat we have. We often won't see her at all during the day. On those days she only comes at night for some love and dinner. She doesn't care much about the hierarchy, she is third but she still does pretty much whatever she wants to.Krsangi:
means "Delicate one". Krsangi is the mellowest of our kittens. She spaces out a lot and even though she demands attention quite often, she's the only one that doesn't like to be picked up. She just wants to be around. Krsangi always stays around the house and never roams around on her own. She is at the bottom of the pecking order but she is humble and unassuming. She always has this surprised look on her face, which sometimes makes her look a little bit silly but she is a very sweet cat.Try to be creative with your cat names.
